Program Description

Where you go to school matters. We are experts in EMS education with over 12 years of experience providing EMT students with the knowledge and skills they need to be confident and competent care providers. All of our instructors are state-endorsed EMS educators and current or retired professionals in the field of emergency medicine with a broad range of backgrounds including fire departments and ambulance services, flight medicine, rural EMS, hospitals and clinics, and much more.

This is a 135+ hour emergency medical technician (EMT) program that prepares graduates to function in the pre-hospital and hospital environments. The program provides instruction in basic care of sick and injured persons, including course content in medical emergencies and interventions, trauma emergencies and interventions, airway, respiration, and ventilation management, cardiovascular emergencies, and EMS operations. This fast-paced, professional, and well-organized program includes a mixture of didactic- and skills-based instruction. In order to complete the course, students will be required to demonstrate adequate cognitive knowledge and competence in the required practical skills.

Successful graduation from this program will allow you to test with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians so you can begin a new career in record time.

Program Prerequisites:

• Must be at least 18 years of age by the end of the course
• Must be proficient in English (written and oral)
• Must use legal name as it appears on government-issued ID when registering
• Ability to pass a state-administered background check (see Utah Admin. Code 426-5-3200 for criteria for exclusion from licensure)
• Must have current BLS certification within two weeks of the course start date (see approved list)

Course Time Commitment:

This is an accelerated course compared to the semester-long college EMT courses. The course will cover 3-5 chapters/topics each week. For each chapter, you should expect to read it at least once through, take a quiz on the material, and then each week complete an assignment related to the course material that should take you approximately one hour. Overall, you should expect to spend several hours studying outside of class each week.

In addition to attending class sessions and completing the homework outlined above, the State of Utah also requires that each EMT student complete 100 patient assessments over the span of their course. You should expect to complete half of these within the first half of the course, and the other half during the second half of the course. There will be some time in class to complete these, but the majority of them will need to be completed outside of class. For reference, each assessment takes anywhere from 10-20 minutes to complete.

Program Objectives:

Cognitive: At the completion of the program, the student will demonstrate the ability to comprehend, apply, and evaluate the clinical information relative to his/her role as an entry-level EMT. This includes having a foundational knowledge of airway, respiration and ventilation, cardiology and resuscitation, medical, obstetrics, and gynecology, trauma, and EMS operations.

Psychomotor: At the completion of the program, the student will demonstrate technical proficiency in all skills necessary to fulfill the role of entry-level EMT. The required skills come from the National EMS Scope of Practice Model, the National EMS Education Standards, and the National Model EMS Clinical Guidelines. Examples of required skills include, but are not limited to, patient assessments, airway management, medication delivery, splinting and bandaging, spinal motion restriction, etc.

Affective: At the completion of the program, the student will demonstrate personal behaviors consistent with professional and employer expectations for the entry-level EMT. Students will demonstrate the interpersonal skills necessary to provide empathetic and compassionate care as an EMS professional and to work as a functional member of a healthcare team.

Additional Fees (Not Included in Tuition):

• Textbook : $125 – Students can buy their books elsewhere, but they must bring it to orientation. We will be using the Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, Twelfth Edition. It can be a used or rented book, as we will not be using the publisher’s access code (although some students prefer to buy a new book and utilize the publisher’s content as a supplemental learning tool). Students who purchase books and supplies from the school will pick them up on the scheduled start date of their class.
• Blood Pressure Cuff/Stethoscope: $40 – Students can purchase a set through the school in the Gear Shop and will pick them up on the scheduled start date of class. Students may also purchase a set elsewhere, but must bring it to class on the first day.
• BEMS Fee**: $110.25 – Paid to the state licensing organization (Application Fee + Background Check & Fingerprints). These fees must be paid online after your course begins by going to www.emslicense.utah.gov.
• NREMT Fee**: $104 – Paid to the national certification organization each time you attempt the cognitive exam. These fees must be paid online after your course begins by going to www.nremt.org.
  **These fees are not paid to EMT Utah and are therefore subject to change at any time.

Required Supplies:

• Textbook: Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, Twelfth Edition
• Blood pressure cuff and stethoscope
• Uniform: Students will receive one free EMT Utah shirt and may purchase additional shirts for $15 each, if desired. Students must also wear black or navy EMS-type pants or scrubs to class each day.
• A watch with a second hand
• Current Basic Life Support CPR: If you do not have one or your card has expired you can take a class from us for a discounted cost of $45 (Save 25% or $15).
